I started my jiu-jitsu journey with Cortes BJJ in January 2020. I had grown up as an athlete and was always used to pushing my body. However, I had not been very active since playing lacrosse in college 6 years prior and had gotten very out of shape.
I needed a change.
I wanted a chance to push myself again and needed a way to do that. I was always interested in watching BJJ and MMA and figured that I could mix my interests with my aspirations. I signed up for Cortes BJJ, and from that point on I was hooked. Professor Nic does a great job of making the sport accessible to everyone. He has a unique way of breaking down techniques and mechanics. He keeps us on our toes, and at the same time is always making class interesting and fun. He has created an environment that bolsters a sense of family, and I am fortunate to have him in my corner both on and off the mats.
This jiu-jitsu family, which continues to grow every day, is amazing. Everyone works hard in order to make both themselves and each other better. Everyone is so positive and kind and the atmosphere makes it fun to train.
I love BJJ for several reasons. Primarily, because of all the positive ways it has impacted my health. I have lost 40 lbs since I started and have been in the best shape of my life when I am actively competing for Cortes BJJ. I also love the mental challenge of BJJ. I love the never-ending flow chart that I visualize during a roll of submissions, escapes, and sweeps. I love the puzzle of how to control an opponent to the point of submission. Finally, I love BJJ for the tight-knit community it has brought into my life. I love all the wonderful people that have come with it. It's crazy to think that some of my closest friends are regularly trying to strangle me.
